You know what to expect when you sign up for an acting class, right? They are going to teach you how to project, how to tap into your emotions, how staging works, etc. etc., right? Right. Well I started an acting class recently and not only was that not how we started, I don't think we will ever get there! It's a two hour class and we spent the first half an hour listening to the teacher yap about movie acting (this is a theater class) and then when we finally got started, it was all improv! Now, I know that improv is important as an actor, but come on... It was fun, but they have a seperate class for improv.
Anyway, one of the prompts was that there were four of us in line for a gaming console and only three concoles. Of course, this gives us the initial conflict and we got to choose our own characters. It was supposed to be someone who was nothing like ourselves, but that didn't exactly work out for some of my co-actors.
I was fourth in line, meaning that I was the one who was not going to get a console when the store opened. I chose to be the "basic gamer" type of person, since I don't play video games. I pretended to have my phone out and was either texting, gaming or pretending to swipe through social media the whole time. The woman in front of me was in line to get the console for someone else and the dude next to her was being paid to stand in line. The guy at the front was actually into video games. Anywho, the woman, let's call her Shania, sat down on the ground like she was sick of waiting in line. The dude, let's call him George, started looking through his pockets and pulled out a fake pack of cigarettes. He asked if anyone had a lighter, and thinking I was brilliant, I told him I had one in my car he could go get. He didn't fall for it. However, Shania had one in her pocket that she handed him. He went to light the cigarette and she slapped the lighter out of his hand, saying that he couldn't smoke in line. George turns to the guy, let's call him Preston, and asked if he would save his spot. Preston half agrees so George steps out of line to grab teh lighter, and goes to step back into line. Shania stops him and says he has to stay over there while he smokes. There is still a gaping hole between Shania and Preston so I text on my phone and step into the spot. The director said that Shania should have sopped me, and that letting me step into George's spot was unrealistic, but I thought it was fabulous! I moved up two spots! Anyway, George tried to yell at Preston for not holding his spot, but since Preston hadn't stopped me from taking it, I defended him. Now, my favorite line of my performance pops up. George looks at me and says "that felt a little passive agressive..." Me, not looking up from my phone, "Really? I thought it was agressive agressive..." The director said it would have been funnier if George had been setting me up for the joke on purpose, but it is what it is. It was funny, and I snuck a reference to one of my favorite movies (The DUFF) into rehearsal! Win win situation!
So, that is the story of how I accidentally bullied an actor who is about a foot taller than me into letting me get a gaming console before him, despite me not even knowing two types of gaming consoles...
